EMC Elect 2014… Honoured again

January 15, 2014 By asceticadmin

I am very pleased and honoured to be selected again as an EMC Elect 2014. Last year was the inaugural group with 75 members, and this year we have 80 members selected.

Being part of this highly talented and intelligent group of people (including my mentor Chad Sakac) is very exciting. In 2013, I participated in many events and was quite active at VMWorld as part of the #SD7. We engaged with new and existing members, and discussed about a lot of topics which increased collaboration and community spirit.

This year again I look forward to working very hard and earn this EMC Elect honour for which I have been selected. I am a techie at heart and since I work with EMC and VMware technologies the most I am very eager to share my knowledge on ECN, LinkedIn, My Blog, and Twitter.

A big thank you to Mark Browne, Stephanie McBride, Sean Thulin who work very hard behind the scenes to continuously bring enhancements to this program. Also, many thanks to Mathew Brender (ex-EMC ) who ran the program in 2013 and came up with some great ideas alongwith Mark Browne, Brian Carpenter, Tommy Trogden, and Sean Thulin.

If we haven’t met or communicated before but now you are seeing this post – please reach out and say hello. I will be very happy to interact with you and also answer any questions you have about the EMCElect.

VMware Data Recovery fails to backup virtual machine with dedicated swap file disk (2013450)

January 13, 2014 By asceticadmin

Symptoms

Backing up a virtual machine using VMware Data Recovery (VDR) fails
The VMware Data Recovery Appliance vcbAPI-X.log file contains entries similar to:

2011-12-16T01:51:17.523+01:00 [4AE0E940 error ‘Default’] VcbAPI::Snapshot::GetChangeInfo: Got unknown exception while trying QueryChangedDiskAreas.
2011-12-16T01:51:17.523+01:00 [4AE0E940 error ‘Default’] Exception in VCBSnapshot_GetDiskChanges: vim.fault.FileFault
2012-01-17T22:02:30.872+01:00 [49163940 info ‘Default’] VcbAPI::Snapshot::GetUnusedFileInfo: Could not obtain file blocks for “pagefile.sys” on one of Partitions of path: “[LUN_ID] Datastore name.vmdk”, error: 32769
2012-01-17T22:02:30.875+01:00 [49163940 info ‘Default’] VcbAPI::Snapshot::GetUnusedFileInfo: “pagefile.sys” removed from volume

Cause
This issue occurs when a disk associated with the virtual machine is used solely for the purpose of a swap file.
That is, when you perform a backup of a virtual machine where a swap file is located on a partition/disk other than operating system partition/disk.

vCenter Operations Management Tech Tips

January 8, 2014 By asceticadmin

In the past we have shown you how to manage your Business Critical Applications (BCA) in vCenter Operations Manager.  To do this right we walked you through modeling the application and building tiers, creating supermetrics and KPIs and adding business context to the applications by associating them with lines of business, regions, owners, support levels.  We also helped you create custom dashboards for difference personas to help them understand the status and overall health of these BCAs (not too detailed for the CxO but deep dive for the support teams).

We have also talked about the 3rd party Management Packs that are built by our management partners (EMC, Brocade, HP, Dell, NetApp, etc).  The released versions of these are posted to VMware Solutions Exchange (https://solutionexchange.vmware.com) and take only a matter a minutes to download and install and provide you visibility into the neighboring technologies that help drive virtualization (e.g. storage).
